ORIGIN & INSPIRATION
Love Resurrected was commissioned by the Regina Apostolorum Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to evangelization, to mark a specific moment: the U.S. Catholic bishops’ consecration of the United States to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, held June 11, 2026, at Mary Queen of the Universe Basilica in Orlando — timed to the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. A fiberglass proof of the piece was presented at the USCCB’s Spring Plenary Assembly, on the eve of the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, the same gathering where the consecration itself took place.
Rather than a conventional devotional image, the piece was built to do what Schmalz has said sacred art should always do: invite contemplation and a closer encounter with the Risen Christ, not just depict him.
The fiberglass proof is currently touring locations across the United States, giving audiences a chance to see the piece before the bronze exists. Once finished, the original bronze will be permanently installed at the Pontifical Institute Notre Dame of Jerusalem Center, becoming part of its permanent exhibition on the Shroud of Turin — linking this piece to the Shroud in the same building, not just in concept.
