The concept was born in downtown Toronto on a cold November day when the sculptor, Timothy Schmalz, saw a homeless person completely wrapped in a sleeping bag in the middle of a busy sidewalk. He was deeply shaken and immediately felt: “that is Jesus”.
Blessed by Pope Francis and installed in St. Peter’s Square, this monumental bronze depicts a tapestry of historical refugees. From the center of this unified crowd, a pair of sacred angel wings emerges. It stands as a profound visual call to show hospitality to strangers.
This powerful series of five life-size bronze sculptures brings to life Christ’s famous parable. Each piece urges us to see the face of Jesus in those who suffer in need. These works challenge viewers to actively live out the Corporal Works of Mercy.
